NWC Ratifies New Party Constitution Amendments

NWC Ratifies New Party Constitution Amendments

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Social Democratic Party has ratified a series of amendments to the party's constitution following months of consultations with stakeholders across the country.

The amendments, which were unanimously approved at an emergency NWC session in Abuja, focus on three key areas: strengthening internal democracy, improving financial transparency, and enhancing the role of women and youth in party governance.

Among the most significant changes is the introduction of a mandatory 35% affirmative action quota for women in all party positions, from the ward level up to the national executive. The NWC also approved a new provision requiring all party financial records to be audited quarterly and made available to members upon request.

Another landmark amendment establishes a formal dispute resolution mechanism to handle intra-party conflicts, replacing the previous ad-hoc approach that often led to prolonged disagreements and factional disputes.

"These amendments reflect the core values of our party — social justice, equity, and transparency. We are not just talking about good governance; we are practising it within our own ranks," said a member of the Constitution Review Committee.

The amended constitution will take effect after ratification by at least two-thirds of the state chapters at the next National Convention scheduled for early 2026.
